You definitely don't need it, but it sure helps extended the life of your KLR. EM doohickey on the other hand is a nice peace of mind. The temp gague gets hotter than it should (bike heats up to between 220-237 degrees before it cools off back to 196, and does not hold stable temps as claimed).
